Are raspberry ketones safe as a dietary supplement?
In most cases, yes. Raspberry Ketones have no known side effects and have been proven safe for consumption as a dietary supplement. They have been on the market as a supplement for many years. The FDA designates raspberry ketones (also known as p-Hydroxybenzyl acetone) as a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) food additive in Section 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) (source). Other substances in this category include common food ingredients such as bakers yeast, sucralose and xylitol.
However, some researchers believe that raspberry ketones should be avoided if you are diabetic, take antidepressants/anxiety medication, or have high blood pressure (source).
- Diabetes - Raspberry ketones may increase levels of adiponectin, which is a hormone that aids lowering of glucose levels. For diabetics, this can cause blood sugar fluctuations. If you are diabetic, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor before trying raspberry ketone supplements.
- Antidepressants/anxiety medication - Raspberry ketones may also affect levels of norepinephrine, which can react negatively with antidepressant and anxiety medication (causing increased anxiety and agitation in certain cases).
- High blood pressure/heart issues - Increased levels of norepinephrine can have effects on blood pressure and heart rate. It is therefore recommended that you avoid raspberry ketone supplements if you have high blood pressure or a history of heart issues.
